Collembola - Cyphoderus similis

Collembola - Cyphoderus similis
Norfolk, Virginia, USA
December 6, 2009
Size: ~1.4mm
A ghostly springtail. I cannot see any eyes or eye spots. Is this one blind? One of them is missing an antenna.

Cyphoderus similis
Usually found in the close neighborhood of ants, even in ant nests.
Else some kind of Pseudosinella.
To confirm the ID we need to see the furca, more in particular the apex of the dens: the mucro. In Pseudosinella the mucro is very small and indistinct. In Cyphoderus it is quite large and distinct.

BTW, it is not blind. It lacks eyes ;-)

I Didn't Get..
a clear image of the furca :^( Thanks Frans!
