Some kind of aphid gall...

I stumbled on this article in the library last winter while researching something else, and never got around to mining it for information. I paged through it enough to see that it includes several galls that are not noted in Felt (1), so maybe this one will be in there. Do you know what species of Populus this was?

Moving to Eriosomatinae for now... I'll check out that paper again at some point.

P. tremuloides, probably

This was probably P. tremuloides, Trembling Aspen, which is very common here.

Balsam Poplar?

Another choice to consider would be balsam poplar (Populus balsamifera), whose leaves are more elongate than P. tremuloides (see these photos from CalPhotos), which also occurs in New Brunswick.
