Black Widow - Latrodectus variolus - female

Black Widow - Latrodectus variolus - Female
Pickens County, Georgia, USA
October 11, 2009
Size: body length 8-10 mm.
Found on back of house under eave, close to large, messy web.

I didn't get a ventral shot showing the hourglass, unfortunately, so a definite species ID may not be possible.
I'm leaning toward variolus (Northern), but that is just a wild, amateur guess.

Any comments on this spider's ID would be greatly appreciated.

I can't tell them apart with just this view either, but I would lean toward Southern.

Southern
You're probably right, Lynette. Next time I'll be sure to get a ventral shot showing the hourglass marking.
Thanks for your input!
