It was a prickly pear cactus flower. I don't remember the size very well, but if you know how big those flowers are, you can estimate.

Male megachilid.
My best guess is a male in the genus
Lithurge
(aka
Lithurgus
), which are nearly obligate pollinators of prickly pear (that is where you see them most often, anyway).

Lithurgus is the correct name
see Michener, 2000
If Lithurge were correct I would have used this spelling in previous postings
