This is one of the smaller ca
This is one of the smaller carpenter ants, subgenus Myrmentoma. Looks like C. nearcticus. It is variable in color pattern, but is the only one in our region that has the contrastingly lighter pronotum and all-dark gaster of these individuals. The extensive redness of this sample and others like it long led to the notion that this ant is conspecific with C. decipiens, but this is C. nearcticus.

As in this image and typical of many in this genus, larvae diapause in first instar through the winter.
