Agree with Denis that it looks good for Lake. The only western-only Aeshna is Paddle-tailed and that obviously has different appendages.

Aeshna eremita...
My opinion would be Aeshna eremita (Lake Darner)at this point. It does have the stripe on the "face", which excludes A canadensis, A verticalis and a number of others. My only hesitation would be the fact that I don't know the western Aeshna spp all that well, if indeed there are other species that occur in Montana that don't occur on the eastern seabord.
