Camouflaged grasshopper--ID? - Hippiscus ocelote - Male
Williamson County, Texas, USA
October 7, 2005
This is the slightly lateral shot of the same specimen--at least with a different camera angle to the light, though still from overhead. The 'hopper landed on a narrow spot in the trail, where I couldn't move off to the side without getting into cactus.

Hippiscus.
This is almost certainly Hippiscus ocelote, a very abundant and widespread species, especially common in the fall. It can be confused with Xanthippus corallipes, but the latter tends to be much larger, with a conspicuous orange or red flush on the inside face of the hind femur ("thigh"), which should be evident even in these images.

Thanks,
I didn't get the email notification of this ID until the next comment--so a belated thank-you.

Hippiscus.
Indeed it is H. ocelote.

Thanks
Somehow I missed Eric's earlier identification...sometimes the email notifying someone doesn't come through...
