Miniature fried eggs . . .

Miniature fried eggs . . .
Alameda County, California, USA
December 19, 2009
They look like fried eggs. Are they eggs of some kind or scale insects? Found while pruning Pittosporum. This is the back (lower surface) of a leaf. The front of the leaf had a few of these--fewer than the back. Most leaves on the shrub had none.

The photo shows an area about 3/8 inch (10 mm) wide.

Armored scale insects (Diaspididae)
The San Jose Scale is one species that has the exuviae (brown part) in the middle like that, but there are others and I don't know how to distinguish them.
