Lordotus - female

Lordotus - Female
Angeles Crest, ~7000 ft., San Gabriel Mountains, Los Angeles County, California, USA
September 11, 2005
On Chrysothamnus nauseosus.
Thanks to Neal Evenhuis (Bishop Museum, Honolulu, HI) for confirming the genus.

A golden bee fly...
Who really deserves its name! That such a sexual dimorphism could exist in this family is new for me. Too bad we in Europe don't have such a jewel - only the dull Bombylius major is all too plentiful in the spring!

Lordotus
females fade as they age, from reddish-orange to yellow to white, according to Catherine Toft of UC Davis. (see http://trc.ucdavis.edu/catoft/lordotus.htm)
According to Toft, adult females have a life expectancy of 12-14 days, adult males only 5-6 days. More observations on the behavioral ecology of two species of Lordotus on above web site.
