Explanation of Names

Author of genus is Eschscholtz, 1830. Perhaps from Greek rhag meaning to break out, broken; also a grape or berry, plus Greek nyx (?), night (1).

Numbers

Nearctica.com lists approximately 42 species.

Remarks

Apparently related genus Rhaxonycha has a confusingly similar name.
