highly variable patterns?
Thanks for the suggestion. Would you happen to know how variable these critters are color-wise within sp.? I found another one parked in genus that looks nearly identical.

Color patterns
Not sure about the range of color patterns, however, these bugs seem to be able to blend into their environment like this one.
Some of the pattern may be just debris from the immediate area. I do not know if they are able to adopt a camouflage.

PDF
The first 2 species on your list are mentioned on several websites as having a range of Mexico and South and the other 2 species range includes the US. A large (33.72MB) PDF is available
here
from US Archive, Harvard University Library. It is a University of Kansas Science Bulletin from 1955. Keys to
Gelastocoris
sp. start on page 296. I am not sure how useful it is but it may be of interest.

thanks - had a look
I grabbed the doc and had a look at it. Unfortunately this photographer doesn't understand the "big words" enough to decipher for ID purposes :-)
I do appreciate the link. It's interesting.
