Sleepy Orange Caterpillar - Abaeis nicippe

Sleepy Orange Caterpillar - Abaeis nicippe
Worcester County, Maryland, USA
May 25, 2009
This caterpillar was feeding on sundial lupine (Lupinus perennis).

Not feeding?
A year has gone by since I photographed this. Yesterday I saw more sleepy orange caterpillars in Caroline and Worcester Counties, Maryland, also on lupine leaves, also aligned on the center of a leaflet and quite motionless, just like this one was. I suspect that my original interpretation that the caterpillar was resting is wrong. Now I suspect that the caterpillar rests in this position during the day, relying on its cryptic appearance for defense, and it probably feeds at night.

If anyone happens to read this and has info to share, I'd love to hear it...
