Are those eyes next to the orange spot on its head? It's hard to tell on this photo, but there is another one below the obvious two and then one to the left of them.

For caterpillar morphology
see Caterpillars of Eastern Forests. I think the actual eyes are like little dots below these eye patches. Looking closer, the top two visible in this image may have some moisture caught on them, which is why they show up more.
