I've been contemplating shots like this but haven't done them yet. Actually, I bring the subjects home and they sit for awhile in their containers and then I guiltily release them after I realize I will not find time to photograph them.

 
Card containers

I actually used clear plastic baseball trading card containers to shoot the waterbugs in. They are not very deep, and not very wide, so you can focus on them at just about any point inside.

I didn't like the white background on the earlier shots I posted, so I printed out some greenish photo backgrounds and slid them underneath the container for color.
