Meloe americanus - male

Meloe americanus - Male
Denton, Martinak State Park, 38.861, -75.839, Caroline County, Maryland, USA
October 21, 2000
Size: 14 mm
Crawling on the ground in deciduous woods on a chilly fall night. This male was collected with this female . I believe this is Meloe americanus based on the sparse punctatation on the head and pronotum but with the sides of the pronotum being sinuate rather than straight as with M. impressus.
(see comments posted with
Also, you can see that the distal portion of the fifth antennomere is less flared in the male M. americanus than in the male M. impressus

However, I am confused in that the female M. americanus(?) I posted earlier appears to have somewhat denser and coarser punctation than the male. I hope that Dr. Pinto can take a look and help us out.
Note: You must obtain a permit to collect insects in Maryland State Parks and Forests.

ID confirmed by John Pinto: M. americanus
his comment: "appear[s] to be correct IDs (M. americanus) - although [this photo] shows more bluish coloration than is typical. Perhaps this is an artifact of photography?"
