This is not Allograpta obliqua, as I'd originally IDed it, but Allograpta exotica instead. Details below...

...on getting your January record for this species -- and really nice shots too! I suspect that the remaining blank spot (September) may be harder to find, but if there's any man up to the task, it surely must be you. :-)

 
You're welcome. Hey, I did it all for you.
I'm seeing a fair number of syrphids, but they're typically into the flowers and moving. (Ovipositing is my guess.) In this case, I got out of the car, walked over to a bush, saw this one sitting atop a flower at the perfect level...then watched as a honeybee chased the fly away. Bummer. On my fourth trip back, I found it again and succeeded.

Watch this space in September for future developments. You're quite the taskmistress. Even Abigail doesn't give homework.
