curtsying darkling beetle - Asbolus verrucosus

curtsying darkling beetle - Asbolus verrucosus
Desert Edge, Riverside County, California, USA
January 17, 2010
We found quite a few of these under wood and other garbage in the desert. When touched they all stuck their legs out and every one of them crossed its front legs in this same way. I balanced this one in a standing position for clearer views.

Asbolus verrucosus -- det. R.L. Aalbu
Moved from Centriopterini.

Moved
Moved from Darkling Beetles.

Asbolus...
or possibly Cryptoglossus. Tribe Centriopterini either way.

The fore legs look like the legs of a dancing ballerina!
^^

Death-feigning beetle.
I believe this is a species of Asbolus.

Thanks Eric,
I looked at those, but didn't feel confident to make the call. They sure do fake death well.
