Phidippus Audax Egg Case and Spiderlings - Phidippus audax

Phidippus Audax Egg Case and Spiderlings - Phidippus audax
Sacramento County, California, USA
November 5, 2005
How long before the spiderlings leave the sac? I have noticed them moving around within the sac, but haven't observed them leave. The female spun the sac and laid eggs 10/07/05.

They should emerge from the s
They should emerge from the sac about 2-3 weeks after eclosion, but they might not leave the area right away. I've observed both P. audax and (possibly) P. clarus young hanging around on the same or nearby leaf as the sac they came from for at least a week after emergence. If the female is alive she will likely stay close by. Her presence or absense doesn't seem to make much difference to how long they stay near the sac.

My experience is only based on observing two egg-sacs, so your mileage may vary. :-)

Thank you
Thank you for following up. It was fascinating watching the female create the sac and lay the eggs. I would love to get a better look at the new spiders and was hoping they would venture out soon.

I haven't seen the female around in a while. If she is still well, it would be interesting to see what she looks like after laying all those eggs.
