Grooves under bark - Phoracantha semipunctata
Carpinteria Bluffs, Carpinteria, CA, Santa Barbara County, California, USA

More of my "grooves in a eucalyptus trunk" photos. This one shows some of the widest grooves. My hand (normal-sized adult male) for scale.

Different kind of beetle larva
This wide gallery is definitely not caused by a bark beetle (Scolytinae). Likely a buprestid, or maybe a cerambycid.

Hm.
Maybe Phoracantha semipunctata? The galleries illustrated at http://cisr.ucr.edu/eucalyptus_longhorned_borer.html look like a pretty good match, and at least one account I've found lists Eucalyptus globulus as being prone to them.

Thanks for the help!
