Moth Fly Pupa - Clogmia albipunctata

Moth Fly Pupa - Clogmia albipunctata
Alexandria, Fairfax County, Virginia, USA
February 1, 2010
Size: 4.5 mm
Last night when I checked on the larvae, I noticed a bunch of different-looking ones in there now, and soggy-looking larvae. Looks like several have pupated! Which means I get pictures to share with you guys. =)

I have reason to believe this pupa is from the skin next to it; that larva was hanging out in a droplet hanging down from the plastic wrap I have over their little rearing cup for a couple days, and then yesterday this pupa was up in the same droplet with it.

This is a ventral view taken through the plastic wrap.

Moved
Moved from Moth Flies.

Ears
I like the ears.

Midge pupae have them too, for breathing underwater.

I do too!
They remind me of horses' ears. =) I figured they must be for breathing.
