Spotted Tussock Larva, 5th Instar - Lophocampa maculata
Hidden Corners Sanctuary, Town of Bailey's Harbor, Door County, Wisconsin, USA
August 25, 1997
Size: Unrecorded
Larva was found, in what appeared to be the 4th instar, eating Willow (Salix). This is the 5th instar. It formed a cocoon several hours after this photo was taken, overwintered in the refrigerator and eclosed May 2, 1998.

Sequence
Did you take pictures of the pupa and adult? It would be nice to have the whole series, also, is this the same specimen as

Spotted Tussock Larva, possibly 4th instar
Janice J. Stiefel Yes, Beatriz, this is the same individual. Like I said, I found it on Willow on Aug. 16, 1997 and the 5th instar photo was taken on Aug. 25, 1997. It made a cocoon out of its own hairs. Unfortunately, I did not photograph that, but did note it in my data base. Actually, I have a better photo of the 5th instar from 1996. That one was eating Red-Osier Dogwood, but I only found it in the 5th instar.
