Sandalus Pair - Sandalus - male - female

Sandalus Pair - Sandalus - Male Female
Roosevelt County, New Mexico, USA
September 28, 2008
Size: Male:17 mm, Female:21 mm
Collected by Robert Androw. Sandalus niger?

Moved
Moved from Sandalus porosus.

So according to Doug Yanega's comment
on our Facebook discussion, all our 'porosus' might have to go back to genus.
"looking at the three images that BugGuide gives under porosus, they appear to be three different taxa, none of them likely to be porosus; all three IDs were done based purely on geography or process of elimination. That won't work for this genus."

S. porosus
This MIGHT be S. porosus. Leconte's description states that the pronotum has straight sides, as in S. niger. The other species in the guide currently under S. porosus are questionably identified and probably represent different species. S. porosus is stated to have a densely punctured pronotum, but I can't make out that feature in this image. Leconte also states that the females he examined were unique among the Nearctic Sandalus in having the elytra concave and relatively narrowly margined at the base. Again, not sure if that fits these specimens.

Sandalus porosus
is the species (so far) known from NM, as well as AZ, TX, CO and FL.
