Wow
16 years in Orange County and all I ever saw were the large black carpenter bees. Is this species rare? or does it have a limited range?

Valley Carpenter Bees
You've seen the same species. The male is blond and very short-lived, while the female is black. Oddly enough, I don't seem to have any pictures of the females- they just haven't been around much in the past few years since I've had a camera (or at least not while I've had one handy).

It's
too bad the females don't look as nice.
