Size
>5 mm; the largest NA leiodines
Identification
large size • sub-basal transverse impression or row of punctures on the pronotum • peculiar habitus • tendency of being active during the coldest season (specimens taken mostly from snow) ...all make this group easily recognizable among Leiodidae(1)
Range
5 spp. in the Northwest and one (M. tibiocalcaris) in e. ON(1)
Habitat
forests, usually mixed; M. matthewsii also on sand dunes(1)
Season
adults are usually much more abundant late in the season and during the cold months (throughout winter), although have been collected in low numbers during most of the year(1)

Remarks
collected most commonly on snow or in flight interecept traps (a few at UV light, in pitfall or malaise traps)(1)
