This is the same beetle Aaron Schusteff photographed here. While we were watching it, a European earwig ran across the path near the beetle. The beetle saw it, turned towards it, ran up to it, grabbed it, and proceeded to chew on it while we were watching. At least we know it will have an endless food source, even if its habitat disappears due to development.

Here is a photo of a second earwig that ran out onto the trail right after the one that this beetle caught.
