Wyeomyia - female

Wyeomyia - Female
Vero Beach, Indian River County, Florida, USA
November 21, 2005
This indivdual is showing the classic resting posture of the genus, with the hindlegs canted well over the abdomen.
This genus includes two species that inhabit bromeliad tanks, Wy. vanduzeei and Wy. mitchellii and also one that inhabits the tanks of pitcherplants, Wy. smithii.

Wyeomyia
A good photo that shows all the characteristics of the genus, including the very short palps, visible at the base of the proboscis. I made a Wyeomyia page for this one, but from the angle of the photo, I can't tell for sure whether the scales on the antepronotum are silvery/whitish (indicating vanduzeei), or purplish/black (indicating mitchellii).
Do you have - or can you get - a photo from another angle that shows this area?

...
I realize that the photo does not show these features, but this was a specimen in hand and I confirmed this after the photo shoot. I have been trying to get all the mosquito images of live individuals rather than dead under the scope. What my next plan is is to stick my hand in a cage of these, get them to bloodfeed and then move my hand out to get the shot. Perhaps tommorrow.
I have also posted some Uranotaenia photos that could use a home. Unfortunately, the images I got of these were not the best and it will be some time before I can get more. They do show the major ID characters though.
