N. FL bryantae beauty - Phidippus audax - female

N. FL bryantae beauty - Phidippus audax - Female
Florida, USA
This one is an offspring of the original orange bryantae that I posted in photo #31818. It is a sub-adult pictured, but has all of the abdominal markings that it'll have as an adult. Its carapace bands may still become more full. This specimen and some of its siblings are an "extreme" variation of the bryantae color form. In a typical bryantae color form, the sides of the abdomen will have colored scales, but the black color (lack of scales) will remain over most of the top-side (dorsal) of the abdomen, excluding the spots. Notice that the only black remaining on the dorsal side of the abdomen are the patches of irridescent scales and the space between them laterally around the center spot and to the spinneret. I've only seen this extreme variation in the specimens from north-central FL. Although it may also be true occasionally for specimens in the panhandle region and into southwestern GA. I recently found "N. FL audax" (adults with orange to red-orange abdominal markings) in SW GA, but the specimens that I saw all had the three-spot pattern (no fused spots). I did see some with and without carapace bands, full to almost no basal band, and varying degrees of lateral bands. These are the typical variations found in North-central FL, so it may be safe to assume that these "extreme" bryantaes may rarely occur in SW GA.
