This is probably correct,
but I find that
Chortophaga mendocino
is confusingly similar, and I haven't seen enough material from around the Bay Area to be certain. This could potentially be either one, but I do think it is probably
C. pacifica
(it has the right shape, and "look" about it).
Can you estimate the length (
C. mendocino
should be about 20 mm; and
C. pacifica
about 16 mm)? Also, did you happen to get some photos from other angles? A shot of the face and/or one from above would be quite helpful.

This looks like a male
Chimarocephala pacifica
to me, but do wait for David Ferguson to correct/confirm that.

First I would like to welcome a fellow POTN member to the bugguide!! Thanks so much for posting this image!
I will be very interested to see what David has to say. Looking at the images for the species Natalie posted it looks like that might be the one. I was thinking Arphia Sulphurea but hey I am just a photographer taking a guess..lol.
