Size: about 3 cm
I'm sorry about the fingers in the picture. Is this a ground beetle of some kind? Found in the grass close to a lake shore. I could not identify it with my field guide (N.Audubon Society, Field Guide to Insects & Spiders). It had very impressive pinchers. Thank you!

Wow! Homo sapiens photographens A personal favorite among the many variations of this very common species!

I don't know what kind of beetle it is, but I'm sure I'd do the same in your place- to prevent harm to the beetle as well as the fingers.

Prionus laticollis
is my guess. Compare with other images.
