Grub

Grub
Pagosa Springs, Archuleta County, Colorado, USA
March 29, 2010
Size: ~2.5 CM, 1"
Found while splitting firewood (Ponderosa.) There are lots of longhorned beetles in the area. Can anyone identify from the larva? I find a lot of Monochamus up there, but that doesn't mean that's what this is.

Moved
Moved from ID Request.

Whatever it is, it's still alive.
I put it in a little jar with some woodchips. I have no idea how to culture these things, but I guess I'm hoping it will pupate. I suspect it will be an unsuccessful experiment, but I am hoping to see what it turns into.

Siricidae
Can be common in Ponderosa.

Probably a sawfly larva, given the size
Otherwise it may have been a Mordellid. Mordellid and wood-boring sawfly larvae look surprisingly similar. See a discussion about the similarities here. If it's a sawfly then it's probably a Siricid or a Xiphydriid.
