early Bumble Bee - Bombus impatiens - female

early Bumble Bee - Bombus impatiens - Female
Cross Plains, Dane County, Wisconsin, USA
April 1, 2010
This must be one of the earliest dates that I have seen a bumble bee out gathering nectar. Of course it's also one of the earliest dates for daffodils to be in bloom, too.

Moved from Bumble Bees.

Subgenus Pyrobombus
probably impatiens

Agreed
Earliest date I have seen the bumble queens out too. In fact I saw some surveying for nest sites already. It's crazy

This one is probably impatiens, but I don't think there is any way to be sure from this angle

bumble bee
This one was very energetic and didn't stay still so this was about the only photo I got. We had a few days of temps in the 70's and up to low 80's in the past few days but it may cool down again. I don't expect to see any bees out in the next few days.

They are everywhere here
The cherry trees bloomed very early, and there are dozens of bumble queens all over the blooms. This is one of the earliest springs ever
