Unknown Arachnid - Myrmekiaphila comstocki
Cass County, Texas, USA
April 11, 2010
Size: 3/4"
I first spotted this spider in shallow water at the edge of my pond. I took a pic then extended a stick for him to climb onto. I was surprised when he dove under water and attempted to hide in the vegetation. I eventually got him out and took this shot. He seemed sluggish at first and even lay on his back momentarily but quickly seemed to recover and scurried off. It does not look like a water dwelling spider and I am at a loss for an ID.

Mygalomorph
This is one of the mygalomorph spiders, probably a trapdoor spider of some kind. Most likely family would probably be the Cyrtaucheniidae, but do wait for comments from other folks. Neat find in any event, and your observations of its behavior are quite valuable.
