Western Tent Caterpillar (Malacosoma californicum?) - Malacosoma californica

Western Tent Caterpillar (Malacosoma californicum?) - Malacosoma californica
Auburn, Washington, USA
May 16, 2004
About 35mm. About a half mile from where I found that other nest last week. These things were everywhere. I found two empty tents, wasps eating the cats, and counted over a hundred caterpillars before I gave up. Ranging from about 15mm to about 40mm. Does the concept of 'male' and 'female' apply at this stage of their lives?
