Coleoptera Wish List: Let's fill the gaps

=go to recent comments=
This list of beetle genera not yet in the Guide is based primarily on (1)(2).
Its goal is to help the Guide expand in a more methodical way; this is a call for action, aimed mainly at those colleagues across North America who have both access to major collections and experience in photography.
The list is a self-explanatory ‘internal’ document; thus the austere format [no italics], casual range notation, etc.

PRIORITIES are not easy to define; more obvious considerations include:
Complement other online sources: focus on taxa not represented in the MCZ data base and the like.
Fill higher-rank gaps: genera representing missing subfamilies/tribes are top priority.
Focus on obscure, cryptic groups to make coverage of such taxa uniquely complete – this is BG's great competitive edge.
Maximize visual value: in a visual guide the highest impact will be achieved by adding taxa that are (a) distinctive, easily recognizable, (b) wide-ranging, and (c) more likely to be encountered.
Concentrating on species described by early workers (Melsheimer, Say, the Europeans...) –-retracing the steps of the forefathers–- would be a great way to cover the basics (i.e. the more common faunal elements) AND complement the MCZ DB, where the next great wave of taxa (LeConte, Horn, and Fall’s) is excellently represented while the early essentials are not.

* * *
I will highly appreciate any corrections/additions and suggestions re: list concept and format; and whom to contact for help with a particular group/geographical area. I’ll be removing (not crossing out) the entries to watch it shrink.

Distribution is not indicated for widely distributed and eastern taxa; non-native taxa in brackets. I did not include taxa that are but occasionally intercepted or have unconfirmed status.
Tim Loh did all the work with the aquatic families and the Carabidae; Adam Brunke, with the staphs; Abby Parker, with the LBs. Their help is much appreciated.
Ron, Harsi, and Max tried hard to make my non-native English palatable. Can't thank them enough.

thanks, taken off the list
i also found a series of Thesium cavifrons (Don agrees) in my porch light catch, will post soon -- but it's another 1 mm monster and i'll have to do better than just my phone camera, although Don was able to confirm my ID from a rather dismal shot

Never before seen spiders killing apex predators
I have a black widow in captivity that I caught about a year and a half ago and over the course of time(obviously provoking the spider) Have put this spider into combat positions against some of the most dominant insects(hornets, bees, black widows, brown widows, potato bugs, giant orb weavers, and praying mantis’ and this spider has killed every single one. I’ve never seen an apex predator so dominant in my life. I have never before seen footage of such encounters that I’ve been trying to get out to the insect community. Even have videos of two large black widows taking down one prey at the same time! Lol and then they start going at each other. I’d like to show such footage to someone reputable who could use it because it is literally never before seen footage. And I’m not expert but based off this I can gain there is numerous info to learn from these videos. Contact me if you’d like to know more. Even though I’m quite busy I will put my personal phone number so you know I am legitimate. Chris 8184818844.

awesome, thanks
the exciting season catch slowly forces me back to our project, Curt -- with several carabid spp added to my backyard list, and more specimens to a number of underrepresented spp.

No worries at all, take your time

No worries, same here
Rhinoscepsis added too-

correction to your list:
Harminius triundulatus (Elateridae) is now in Diacanthous, as Diacanthous has been elevated to genus status from subgenus status within Harminius. Hume Douglas identified a specimen for Derek Sikes and is trying to get him to post a pic to BG, so maybe we'll get it checked off soon!

Need new species page
Hi,

I just added Phloeosinus canadensis to BG. It was identified by A. Cognato.

done
You can make these requests in the subforum "Requests for Additional Guide Pages". This thread is devoted to tracking additions of beetle genera that are missing from the guide.

Encephalus
added by the Balabans

Dineutus productus
I just added Dineutus productus Roberts to BG. Can someone please look at and possibly make a species page?

Essostrutha can be taken off the list

another dermestid
It may or may not be established, not sure if it should be on list. Unknown species of Hemirhopalum found in Arizona, unclear whether it is introduced or new species or both.
