Coleoptera Wish List: Let's fill the gaps

=go to recent comments=
This list of beetle genera not yet in the Guide is based primarily on (1)(2).
Its goal is to help the Guide expand in a more methodical way; this is a call for action, aimed mainly at those colleagues across North America who have both access to major collections and experience in photography.
The list is a self-explanatory ‘internal’ document; thus the austere format [no italics], casual range notation, etc.
As of 7.iv.2024, just over 260 genera missing, of which ~140 in the Staphylinidae.

* * *
I will highly appreciate any corrections/additions and suggestions re: list concept and format; and whom to contact for help with a particular group/geographical area. I’ll be removing (not crossing out) the entries to watch it shrink.

Distribution is not indicated for widely distributed and eastern taxa; non-native taxa in brackets. I did not include taxa that are but occasionally intercepted or have unconfirmed status.
Tim Loh did all the work with the aquatic families and the Carabidae; Adam Brunke, with the staphs; Abby Parker, with the LBs. Their help is much appreciated.
Ron, Harsi, and Max tried hard to make my non-native English palatable. Can't thank them enough.

done
You can make these requests in the subforum "Requests for Additional Guide Pages". This thread is devoted to tracking additions of beetle genera that are missing from the guide.

Encephalus
added by the Balabans

Dineutus productus
I just added Dineutus productus Roberts to BG. Can someone please look at and possibly make a species page?

Essostrutha can be taken off the list

done -- thanks

another dermestid
It may or may not be established, not sure if it should be on list. Unknown species of Hemirhopalum found in Arizona, unclear whether it is introduced or new species or both.

Beal. 2011. A species of Hemirhopalum Sharp (Coleoptera: Dermestidae) from Central Arizona, U.S.A. Coleopterists Bulletin 65: 134.

a dermestid
Phradonoma nobile, reported from Arizona by Hava etal 2011 in Coleop. Bulletin; introduction from Palaearctic

thanks!
posted a placeholder pic

Trichonotuloides (Aphodiinae) newly recorded from the US
not sure if this is given genus-level status on BG or not (The Guide seems to be selective on which aphodiinae genera it chooses to recognize as valid).

Dietzianus off the list
(1)

Just added a new one
http://bugguide.net/node/view/899672

If someone would be so kind to make the page

perfect --got it, thanks again
the easiest way to add a link to any guide page/image is useing the [cite:xxxx] format; in this case, substituting xxxx with the image number 899672 from the URL will turn into(1)

Barrelater Johnson, 2014 [Elateridae]
New genus to accommodate B. audreyae Johnson, 2014 from WA, ID, OR, NV.

thanks!

Strigister Caterino, Tisheschkin, and Proudfoot, 2013
new histerid genus to accommodate S. tecolotito Caterino, Tisheschkin, and Proudfoot, 2013 from southern Texas [there is a second species in the genus from Venezuela].

got it:

Madreallecula Kanda, 2013
Monotypic genus with one species, M. mcclevei Kanda, 2013.

This new genus should be added to your wish list. I have not read up on the diagnostics yet but images of Hymenorus from Arizona on BugGuide should be compared to this genus.

will solicit pics for the guide from Kojun

Aleocharinae - Goniusa

got it, thanks
guide updated

recently added chryso genera:

Erepsocassis rubella (Boheman)

Poecilocera harrisii (LeConte)

Thricolema anomala Crotch

Cadiz hardyi Andrews and Gilbert

Eusattodera

Trachyscelida

wonderful --thanks

Harminius (Elateridae: Athoini)
needs to be added to Elateridae. This genus contains one species in North America, H. triundulatus (Mannerhein, 1853). It is boreal across NA. I should be getting a specimen soon from NY. When I do (and the det. is correct) I will post to BG. However I am not sure when (if) that will be, pending receipt of specimen and correct ID.

thanks -- added
two boreal prosternines share this epithet (another one is(1)) --beware...

they are quite different species...
but have similar elytral patterns. I have been over all the images on BG and none appear to be Harminius. The pronotal color is slightly different too and, being an Athoini, has membranous tarsal pads.

Becker (1974) had it as an Athous but later (1979) moved it to Harminius. Paul Johnson (pers. comm) says its omission from American Beetles was an oversight.

a footnote
the widespread boreal Eurasian clicker that used to be called Harminius undulatus (De Geer 1774), and has to be rather closely related to the triundulatus (Mnnh.), is currently treated as Diacanthous undulatus (De Geer 1774)

sorta...
the Palearctic undulatus and Nearctic triandulatus were at one time considered conspecific but are now regarded as separate species. To my knowledge they are both in Harminius, but with the Europeans you never know...they get bored and feel the need to start splitting and re-naming...

i can't agree more
let's revive the all-American, golden-age concept of Ctenicera... or Corymbites or whatever, and live happily ever after

Caccoleptus
newly reported from FL, should be added to list

thanks
already posted!

Mike Quinn
added Lygistus streptophallus, Chrysodinopsis, Hilarocassis, Pseudodibolia

ha!!
much indebted, guys. great news.

Aleocharine
Thyasophila sp.

Truquiella
