fishing spider - Dolomedes vittatus - Female
New Milford, Litchfield County, Connecticut, USA
April 4, 2010
Size: body over 5 mm long
Emerged noisily and abruptly from dead leaves at base of japanese barberry clump atop bank of small stream in maple swamp and stood in striped shadows until driven back by clumsy photographer. Evidently these spiders can overwinter as adults. Species and sex ID tentative, based on BugGuide photos.
