Desert Spider Beetle (C. armatus). Its food plant (Chaenactis fremontii/Fremont Pincushion) is seen in background.

What a cool beetle!

At least this image shows why some people like the common name 'Spider Beetle', or 'Desert Spider Beetle'. Common names aren't always clear to me; also they vary with location and author's preference. Evans and Hogue (Introduction to California Beetles. 2004) use 'Inflated Blister Beetle'.
