Water Scavenger Beetle - Sphaeridium bipustulatum

Water Scavenger Beetle - Sphaeridium bipustulatum
Townsend, Middlesex County, Massachusetts, USA
April 15, 2010
Size: 5mm
Found under vegetation in a damp field.

Moved
Moved from Sphaeridium.

I agree w/ S. bipustulatum
based on size- the smallest of the 3 introduced Sphaeridium.

Moved
Moved from Beetles.
S. bipustulatum looks pretty good.

That was my thought
but you can get color variations in these species and I haven't collected enough of them (in the U.S.) to be sure. I can key it out later using Smetana (1978) if Loh or others do not get to it first.

Sphaeridium sp.
lunulatum vs. bipustulatum. Tim Loh will probably bring it home.

Another Hydrophilid?
This one looks a bit like Sphaeridium.

But again, I'm no expert, so let's see what others have to say.
