Predaceous Diving Beetle
Hi Arlo,

This is not a backswimmer, but rather, a predaceous diving beetle, likely a Hanksdiver, Stictotarsus striatellus.

 
Certainly not a backswimmer.
I made some ecological notes under the specimen in the thumbnail, which was found in the same small pool as this one.
