mitchellii - Wyeomyia mitchellii - female

mitchellii - Wyeomyia mitchellii - Female
Vero Beach, Indian River County, Florida, USA
December 3, 2005
The arrow indicates the antepronotum. Note that it is clothed in black scales. This also shows that the vertex (the area right behind the eye) has a line of pale scales. This would separate this species from Wy. smithii. The other character that is different fom Wy. smithii is the postpronotum is clothed in white scales (right behind the antepronotum).

W. mitchellii
Great shot. I've moved the images to the new Guide page.
I see that range and habitat are also good ways to distinguish a live adult mitchellii from smithii in the field: the former doesn't stray far from bromeliads in Florida only, and the latter stays close to pitcher plants in the northeastern U.S. and Canada.
