twig gall on shingle oak - Callirhytis quercuspunctata

twig gall on shingle oak - Callirhytis quercuspunctata
Slip Bluff Park, Lamoni, Decatur County, Iowa, USA
April 15, 2010
Size: ~25 mm diameter
Very common on twigs of Shingle Oak (Quercus imbricaria) trees in young, open woodland, both in the sense of being numerous on individual trees and occurring on trees throughout the park. Most of the galls were weathered relics (crumbly and riddled with holes) from previous years, but several (like this one) appeared to be fresh and intact (firm and without holes).
