California Coastal Dune Beetle - Hypocaccus

California Coastal Dune Beetle - Hypocaccus
Oceano Dunes State Vehicle Recreation Area, San Luis Obispo County, California, USA
July 1, 2004
Size: 4mm
Found only a few of these during sampling on coastal dunes. This one was collected by sifting sand. I don't think I ever caught one in a pitfall trap.

Hypocaccus ?lucidulus
Have looked a bit more. There's some doubt: protibia look a bit narrower, their teeth a bet too long and narrow as it's supposed to be in H. lucidulus. May be something else, but hard to tell with those images. If epeipleura are setose, it's not lucidulus

California Coastal Dune Beetle
Given the locality, habitat and what's seen on the images, it's most probably Hypocaccus lucidulus

Saprininae; head & pronotum suggest Hypocaccus
but it's a very long shot; suggest sending to the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History attn: Michael Caterino

Thanks
I'll do that. Thanks for all the great feedback.

sand dunes...
