Beautiful carpenter bee - Xylocopa californica - male

Beautiful carpenter bee - Xylocopa californica - Male
Carr Canyon, Cochise County, Arizona, USA
April 17, 2010
Size: 28 mm body length
Many of these bees were seen flying around a rocky outcrop on the mountain, chasing each other and defending territories. My friends saw some of them chase another individual "the size of a golf ball", which I'm guessing would be a female. The closest thing I can find on here is Xylocopa californica arizonensis, but the photos on here of that species lack the pale-colored pile and the intense blue coloration (which looks even more vivid in person, it's hard to get the camera to capture it).

Great!
This is the closest thing.. I think it was this dark, but here it is on a bench with a huge hole in it. I thought it looked more intimidating than a Cicada Killer.I thought long like a wasp, but I did a search on wasps and the legs looked so much more muscular.

Did you know we have met? This is the first time I have posted here.
