Explanation of Names
Specific epithet
mendica is from a Latin root meaning "poor", or "a beggar"
(1).
Speculation: the bare areas on the wings perhaps resemble the holes in a beggar's clothing.
Identification
Wings translucent, with light spots on forewings.
Range
Includes eastern North America.
Life Cycle
Larvae feed on maples (Acer) and violets (Viola), rather different and unrelated plants!
Remarks
This is not a typical geometer in appearance, at least.
