This shows that the mass of mites appears to be anchored to the thorax (one was on the elytron as well) by some thread like structures adhering to the cuticle.

These mites are phoretic deutonymphs from the Uropodina group (Acari- Gamasida (aka Mesostigmata). "Thread-like structures" are called "pedicels". These originates as sticky liquid excretion from animal's anal gland, thereafter hardens in contact with air in a form of a stalk. The pedicel keeps an animal firmly attached to the insect body surface. It lets a very small mite travel great distances fastened to the walking or flying insect.
