Ant - Trachymyrmex

Ant - Trachymyrmex
Lady Lake, Lake County, Florida, USA
December 5, 2005
Ant was around 4mm. It looks like it has spikes on it. It was carrying the leaf.

Moved
Moved from Acromyrmex.

Acromyrmex sp.
Quite certain this is one of the fungus-growing ant species in the genus Acromyrmex. Like Atta leafcutter ants, they harvest bits of foliage, take the pieces underground, and mulch them as a substrate for a special fungus that grows only under the care of the ants.

Thank you Eric,
I don't think I would have noticed this being any different than other ants in the yard, except it was carrying the rather large leaf.

That is a Trachymyrmex, Mark
That is a Trachymyrmex, Mark Deyrup list two species of Trachymyrmex in Florida but no Acromyrmex.
