White and Black hairy spider

White and Black hairy spider
Tracy, San Joaquing County, California, USA
April 25, 2010
I found this black and white hairy spider inside my house. Any ideas of whether is friendly or not? Thanks!

Moved from Phidippus. Probably a P. audax, but without additional images, this will remain at genus. This image is not needed for the Guide.

Moved from ID Request. If you can, please crop the image so that the spider fills the frame, as it will help our experts... Do you have any dorsal views from above the spider?

Phidippus audax
Someone just identified this same spider for me. It's a common jumping spider and they're harmless. It's a Phidippus audax.

I think Phidippus is probably right...
but I wouldn't go so far as to name the species. There are species similar to audax (see P. regius, for example), and an expert's eye is often needed to separate them.
