mating backswimmers - Notonecta kirbyi - Male Female
frog pond, Puyallup, Pierce County, Washington, USA
April 25, 2010
Size: around 12 mm
Well, just like Eric's book says I got these mixed up at the pond and told Linda they were water boatmen. My problem is that I call them all water boatmen and always seem to forget that backswimmers exist. These were definitely swimming on their backs. I did handle them gently... and didn't get bit.
