clubtail - Gomphurus lineatifrons

clubtail - Gomphurus lineatifrons
Richmond County, North Carolina, USA
April 28, 2010
I feel certain it is a clubtail. It best matched the black shouldered spineyleg but I didn't get a good shot of the rear legs to look at the spines and the color pattern is off a bit. I believe it is a male. Perhaps it is a juvenile spineyleg.

Splendid
I agree this looks like Splendid Clubtail (Gomphus lineatifrons). I think I can even make out the crossline on the face.

It's a Clubtail for sure
but the dorsal thoracic markings don't quite fit Dromogomphus (Spinylegs). To me they look more like the Common Clubtails (Gomphus subgenera Gomphurus). Could you crop and enlarge the end of the abdomen? I'm thinking male Splendid Clubtail (Gomphus lineatifrons)...which might be a county record based on the range shown in Beaton's Dragons and Damsels of GA and the SE.

Some of my flickr friends sug
Some of my flickr friends suggested Splendid Clubtail and it looks like a good match from the tail and the markings on the thorax. I will upload the tip of the abdomen enlarged.
I also read that the splendid clubtail had not been reported in Richmond County.
