agaristinae caterpillar - Alypia octomaculata

agaristinae caterpillar - Alypia octomaculata
Delcambre, Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, USA
April 30, 2010
found on stairway railing near slope leading to a freshwater pond with wild overgrowth/weeds nearby. Once touched, reluctant to move from head-curled-under-position. Appears to be similar to some in agaristinae, and similar to Pearly wood nymph....

Any suggestions to narrow this down, or redirect the ident?
Thanks,
b

But I vaguely recall that I when I first ran across that caterpillar, there were a couple of similar species that I needed to sort through. The host plant helped a lot.

THANKS!
I think you nailed it perfectly. Have not seen these adults around, so NOW will have to be on the lookout for the adults, since i have always found them VERY cool in pictures i have seen!
Thanks,
b

If you still have the caterpiller
Search on the species to find the host food and try raising it. That should get you a perfect specimen to photograph later.
